Teneriffe (not to be confused with Tenerife!) is a former industrial Brisbane inner city area along the Brisbane River that from the late 19th/early 20th Centuries was dominated by wool stores where wool producers would bring their fleeces for final preparation and baling before being shipped out. During WWII, the area became Australia's largest submarine base but by the early 1980's, Teneriffe had degenerated into a ghost town. Property developers moved in and converted many of the old wool stores (now described as "Woolstores") into loft-style apartments, many with river views. High-end homes were built along the scenic river walk and within a few years, Teneriffe became a trendy inner-city suburb complete with bars, restaurants, boutiques and other accessories needed to attract young professionals....and us!

So our home for a week in Brisbane is in a converted wool store built in the early 20th Century for Winchcombe Carson Ltd.

Refurbished original wood floors and high ceilings provide a clue to the original function of the building. Unfortunately, the conversion was done a bit on the cheap. The walls dividing the space into apartments are paper-thin so at times it was difficult to distinguish noise and movement in our apartment from that coming from the adjacent one!
